It comprised a half-title page, a title page, a haiku poem by the seventeenth century Edo poet Uejima Onitsura, and a colophon. He became fascinated with plants and plant lore and as a result named his press Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium), and under that imprint he published The Death of the Narcissus, a portfolio of "botanico-erotic" etchings. In the spring of 1969 Moser was commissioned to illustrate a trade book, The Flowering Plants of Massachusetts (Vernon Ahmadjian, University of Massachusetts Press, that was not published until 1979). A corner room of the old Easthampton railroad station was given over to set up Williston's Castalia Press and there Moser printed his first letterpress, limited edition book, The Red Rag in 1969. They acquired a 12 x 18 Chandler Price clamshell press, that came with a run of Goudy Oldstyle.

The effect was such that Moser convinced Williston's administration that the school needed a printing press. Walking into the pressroom of Gehenna Press was like walking into another age, to a former life. He was soon befriended by Louis Smith, a glazer, framer, and print collector who introduced him to Leonard Baskin with whom he studied at Baskin's Gehenna Press. In 1967 Barry Moser moved from Tennessee to New England and was teaching at The Williston Academy in Easthampton, Massachusetts. And in some measure, Moser's Bible will bring everyone who touches it a little closer to that rabbi. There are so many surprises here: Abram is jaunty Balaam's Ass stretches his mouth wide, teeth bared, conveying the comic terror of the idea that God would speak through his creatures Moser's first illustration of the Savior, depicts Jesus as such a goofy, joyful, solid man that your heart will leap, wanting to be with him. Even from the first illustration-Adam and Eve, with unapologetically adult bodies, breathtakingly chunky and imperfect, making their way along a stream in the Garden of Eden-it's clear that Moser has a vision of God and humanity whose humility will change the way you see the world. It is no overstatement to say that when you begin turning the pages revelation occurs. These details give the book, as a physical object, a weight and presence that dignifies its reader. Moser's Bible is also available in a Viking Studio edition on acid-free paper, with a satin ribbon marker, specially-sewn binding, and cloth case. Moser, the foremost fine press illustrator of our time, spent four years crafting the 232 relief engravings that illustrate this Bible.

The Holy Bible, designed and illustrated by Barry Moser, is as thrilling an experience as you'll ever find inside a dust jacket. The acclaimed illustrator brings the King James Bible to life with luminous, often haunting images that capture the ordinary human qualities of the book's well-known characters.
